A CMAS - Confederação Mundial de Atividades Subaquáticas (Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques) é a mais antiga organização internacional de treinamento de mergulho e foi fundada em 1958*, em Mônaco, por um grupo de 15 países, entre eles o Brasil, para estabelecer um padrão internacional de treinamento de mergulho. Organizada sob a direção de Jacques-Yves Cousteau, co-fundador do "Aqualung" e pai do moderno mergulho autônomo, a organização conta, hoje, com mais de uma centena de países afiliados. Atualmente, a CMAS está sediada nas instalações do Comitê Olímpico Internacional, em Roma, Itália.                                      

No Brasil a Confederação Mundial é representada pela CBPDS - Confederação Brasileira de Pesca e Desportos Subaquáticos, entidade oficial vinculada ao Ministérios dos Esportes e ao Comitê Olímpico Brasileiro, e única autorizada a expedir, no país, a respectiva certificação internacional de mergulhador.

* A CMAS foi formalmente estabelecida em 10 de janeiro de 1959, cerca de quatro meses após a sessão preliminar conduzida em Bruxelas, em setembro de 1958. Como representante de Mônaco, o capitão Jacques Cousteau presidiu a reunião plenária das 15 delegações nacionais fundadoras da organização. A delegação brasileira era uma delas.

CMAS is the acronym for Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques, also known as World Underwater Federation. Is the world`s first international diver training organization and was founded in January, 1959* in Monaco, by a confederation of fifteen countries, including Brazil, to establish an international diver-training standard.

Organized under the direction of Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the co-founder of "Aqualung" and father of the modern sport of scuba diving, CMAS has grown to a membership of over one hundred countries. CMAS is headquartered within the International Olympic Committee building in Rome, Italy.                                                                    

* The organization was formally established on January, 10th, 1959, nearly four months after a preliminary session conducted in Brussels in September, 1958. As the representative for Monaco, the iconic Captain Jacques Cousteau presided over the plenary meeting of the 15 national delegations that founded CMAS. The brazilian delegation was one of them.
